Native Hawaiian health workshops scheduled
Native Hawaiian health organization Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi is hosting community workshops islandwide. Participants will learn to identify and properly use medicinal herbs, laau, for healing. They will receive hands-on instruction in traditional Hawaiian massage, lomilomi. Students will also learn the ancient Hawaiian art of conflict resolution, hooponopono.
Kahuna Ikaika Dombrigues, who has more than 40 years of experience in health treatment and education using traditional practices, will lead the workshops. Dombrigues continues practices the traditions and teachings of Na Kahuna Lapaau o Mu Heiau O Lono.
Workshops in West Hawaii are scheduled as follows:

c 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 25 at the Imin Center in Holualoa
c 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 9 at the Naalehu Community Center

Imiloa planning
summer program
Imiloa Astronomy Center is seeking junior explorers and innovators for CAMP Imi-POSSIBLE. Sessions of the summer intersession program for kindergarten through fifth-graders are planned May 27 to 31 and June 3 to 7.
Keiki explorers will be immersed in a weeklong adventure of “WAI-ology,” an investigation of the mysterious water realms of inner and outer space. Children will follow in the footsteps of astronomers observing Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa. The final day, parents and keiki will participate in the WAI-ology Hoike, a celebration of new learning.
The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Drop-off is available as early as 7:30 a.m. with pick up by 4 p.m. A healthy lunch and snack should be brought each day. Enrollment is open, but space is limited. Tuition for either weeklong session is $180 for members; $200 for nonmembers.

Coast Guard offers boater safety course
A U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary boating safety course is slated for Saturday at the Coast Guard office at Honokohau Harbor. The class, expected to last eight hours, begins at 9 a.m and costs $40.
Topics of the course, led by U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary members, include an introduction to boating, boating law, safety equipment and navigation. Attendance fulfills the state recreational boat operator course requirements for 2014.

Libraries upgrading reservations system
The Hawaii State Public Library System is performing an upgrade to its Smart Access Management Internet reservation system in two West Hawaii libraries now through Friday. The computers at the Kailua-Kona and North Kohala libraries will be unavailable for reservations through the completion of the upgrade in each library. Walk-up sessions may or may not be available, depending on the progress of the upgrade.
SAM is a computer-based system that allows users to reserve and register for Internet sessions in HSPLS’s 50 public libraries; it helps HSPLS maximize the use of public Internet computers and ensures equal access for our patrons.
The upgrade is necessary to stabilize the SAM Internet reservation system and make it fully compatible with the Windows 7 operating systems in the recently installed public computers. To lessen the impact on library patrons, the upgrade is being scheduled during a traditionally slow period of the year and as much as possible on days when the libraries are scheduled to be closed.

in Honaunau
Slow Food Hawaii and One Island are hosting Ginger and Jazz from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Honaunau. A local foods four-course dinner, with vegetarian options, and a jazz quartet will highlight this farm-based dinner event.
